HISTORY:
Everyone agrees that Mt Kenya Safari Club Nanyuki is an
exclusive retreat. Situated some one hundred and ninety kilometres north of
Nairobi, on the slopes of Mt Kenya, it has a reputation for relaxed elegance.
Many of the world's most famous names, be they royalty, film stars or merely
the rich, seek it out as a secluded haven where, although you don your safari
gear during the day, you always dress for dinner. Sir Winston Churchill was
reputed to have been a founder Member. The list of those who joined after the
Club opened in 1959 reads like an international ''Who's Who'', and includes
Prince Berhard of the Netherlands, Lord Louis Mountbatten, author Robert Ruark,
former US President Lyndon Johnson, Conrad Hilton, Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, and a
bevy of celebrities.

Wildlife within
the forests below the park boundary includes elephant, buffalo, lion, several
species of antelope including the rare bongo and occasionally the melanistic
forms of both the leopard and the serval. Much of this wildlife can be seen from
the safety of the Mountain Lodge, which lies just inside the forest on the
south side of the mountain. Mountain climbers should appreciate the need for
acclimatisation over several days before attempting the high peaks. Naro Moru
River Lodge specialises in assisting climbers with guides, porters and
equipment

Facilities
Mount Kenya has a total of 144 rooms, comprising two
villas, 13 riverside and 12 William Holden cottages, eight garden suites and
clubrooms and studio suites. All rooms have a private bathroom with shower,
telephone and log fireplace. The luxury villas, William Holden cottages and the
presidential suite each have a large sitting room. Most rooms also have a
private veranda overlooking the majestic Mount Kenya. There is a choice of two
restaurants, the Mawingo and the Kirinyaga. There are also two bars, the Zebra
Bar and the Trophy Lounge that has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere and is the
ideal setting for cocktail parties.

The 24,000-acre Sweetwater’s Game Reserve
is teeming with a wide variety of wildlife and there is an enormous range of
other sightseeing activities for visitors. These include bird walks, half or
full day game viewing safaris and half or full day trips to challenge Mount
Kenya's rugged slopes.
