Climbing Mount Kenya:Mt Kenya Climbing:Mount Kenya Climbing:Climbing Mt Kenya:Mt Kenya Climbing:
Located 180 kilometers North of Nairobi in Kirinyaga District is Africa’s second highest peak, Mount Kenya.
At 5199 meters only Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro is higher than Mount Kenya in Africa.
The mountain overlooks the 715km2 Mount Kenya National Park.
The Mountain has three peaks Batian, Nelion and Lenana. Batian is the highest peak at 5199 meters and Nelion follows at 5188 meters and Lenana is the third highest.
The three snowy peaks every morning from high- rise buildings in Nairobi or Thika are visible and glitter.

The least treacherous to climb of the three peaks is Lenana. It’s the one most novice hikers or amateur climbers get to. The other two are scaled by skilled seasoned climbers with specialized equipment. From Lenana climbers can view easily the infinite Kenyan horizons unfurl. At sunset and sunrise the silhouette vast plains and hills of Africa hold a spectacular moment in time for climbers.

The three main climbing routes to reach the summit are Sirimon, Narumoru and Chogoria. It takes five to six days to climb up to the peak. Though not preferred due to its long distance the Chogoria Route is ideal for adventurous climbers who want to experience the spectacular green scenery of the Mount Kenya National Park.

The Sirimon route in Nanyuki other than Narumoru is preferred by climbers targeting to reach Nelion or Batian the summit peak. Narumoru is the preferred for descending down the mountain. The Sirimon route offers spectacular view of the scenery, gentler ascent rate it’s also flexible and faster.

Climbers concur when Sirimon is combined with Chogoria route to descend it adds value to the experience. Sirimon route also offers climbers the best view of the peaks.

The Lenana peak can also be approached from the Narumoru route. Though rarely used in ascension, Chogoria route in Meru offers climbers a chance to detour and visit Lakes Michaelson and Ellis. To complete the experience climbers ascend via the Sirimon route. Along the climbing routes there are camps with huts and bandas where climbers can rest and reload. Some are Teleki Valley Rescue Hut, Black Hole Bivvy, Bailles Bivvy and Howell Hut.

Due to harsh cold weather that plagues climbers as they ascend, they are advised to pack heavy winter clothes and serrated boots for grip. Special climbing equipments are provided by the climbing companies. Climbers are advised by medics against rapid ascension as it increases incidences of attitude sickness.

These include lack of sufficient oxygen to breathe whose effects are diminished by rapid descent down.We climb to Mount Kenya assign porters, hikers and skilled guides to assist the climbers.
